As an Eight, Megan’s room matches her bold, always-in-control personality. In switching between her high school home bedroom and her college dorm rooms, her love of pop culture has traveled with her, and influenced the decorations she’s chosen. She is not afraid of large posters and bold colors, and loves proclaiming who she is in her choice of decoration. Though the colors are diverse and energetic, Megan describes her room as “soothing.” All of these aspects of her room relate to traits she carries as an enneagram type Eight.
In her high school bedroom, Megan explains that as someone who hates being controlled, she feels in control when she is able to fully customize her space. She says, “If I can express myself through the spaces I do have control over, it eases the hatred of being controlled.” It makes sense that Megan’s choice of decoration are so bold, in that she uses large banners and bright posters to claim a space as her own. Eights aren’t afraid to stand up for what they believe in, and so her room too stands up for who it is. Her banner, which reads, “Don’t Give Up the Ship,” is a perfect example of her desire for control and her willingness to work hard to do what she believes is right.
Another aspect of control that Megan talked about was the photo wall. Though it’s pictured below, she took it down after she broke up with her boyfriend and drifted apart from her friends in the photos. Being able to adjust a room to reflect her reality helps her feel like she is in control of her life, and make her room a place that truly makes her happy.
Even though Megan loves pop culture, a lot of the decorations pictured in her high school room aren’t up anymore. This is because her old room reflects a lot about who she was, but also who she isn’t anymore. Her Star Wars poster is one of the only pieces of decor that is still up today. Because her interests change so much, she focuses now on only displaying interests that she’s had “long-term,” and that poster in particular has stood the test of time.
Enneagram type Eights also have an innate sense of justice, something that is reflected in Megan’s room in her college dorm in particular. On the ‘pop culture wall’ above her bed, Megan chose to display, among other things, posters for Wonder Woman, Band of Brothers, and Spider-Man. Each of these has some aspect of a larger-than-life hero or group of people who fight for what they believe in. In one particular type Eight description, the writer said, “Think of superheroes and you’d have a pretty good idea of how this personality type functions.” Megan looks up to the type Eights she admires in TV and movies that reflect her own strengths, and therefore they are proudly displayed on her walls.
