Most commonly known as the Reformer, enneagram type 1’s are driven by a need for perfectionism. Because they think nothing is ever quite good enough, they strive for perfection and self-control both in themselves and external circumstances. 1’s tend to be principled, structured, and idealistic, with a gift for integrity and reform.

Most commonly known as the Helper, enneagram type 2’s are driven by a need to be loved and appreciated. 2’s value helping others, and thus personal relationships are very important to them. They love to pour all of their energy into their closest friend and family. 2’s tend to be warm, empathetic, and self-sacrificial, with a gift for relationship development and generosity.

Most commonly known as the Achiever, enneagram type 3’s are driven by personal success and validation. Type 3’s want to be both successful and known for their success, so long as this recognition reflects their desire for personal excellence. 3’s tend to be incredibly ambitious, efficient, and image-conscious, with a gift for adaptability.

Most commonly known as the Individualist, enneagram type 4’s are driven by a need to be unique among others. This desire acts as a double-edged sword, as 4’s want to stand out from the crowd, but also struggle to feel like they fit in. 4’s tend to be emotional, highly imaginative, and courageous, with a gift for self-awareness and courage.

Most commonly known as the Investigator, enneagram type 5’s are driven by a need to learn about and understand the world around them. Because of this, 5’s are one of the more independent types, sometimes to the point of isolation, if only to gain an objective perspective. 5’s tend to be perceptive, innovative, and at home in their own minds, with a gift for curiosity and self-sufficiency.

Most commonly known as the Loyalist, enneagram type 6’s are drive by a need for security and belonging. 6’s are often typed as the “loyal sceptic,” because they need complete trust in a relationship, but once they have that, they give others their full loyalty. 6’s tend to be devoted, anxious, and team-oriented, with a gift for responsibility and being trustworthy.

Most commonly known as the Enthusiast, enneagram type 7’s are driven by a need to live life to the fullest and avoid pain. They are constantly on the lookout for the next great adventure, and spend their lives seeking out one after another. 7’s tend to be future-oriented, flexible, and optimistic, with a gift for spontaneity and practicality.

Most commonly known as the Challenger, enneagram type 8’s are driven by a need to be in control of a situation and avoid showing vulnerability. 8’s strive for justice and aren’t afraid to get confrontational to achieve it. Because of this, they want to appear strong at all times. 8’s tend to be decisive, influential, and protective, with a gift for self-confidence and assertion.
