Ashtyn, a Two on the enneagram, describes her room as “cozy.” When asked about which part of her room was her favorite, she lit up and explained how she treasures the notes from her family and friends. Many of them are birthday cards. Some have Bible verses on the front. Others have cute animals like a cartoon hedgehog. All of them contain words of encouragement and praise that are specially tailored to Ashytn, which help meet this Two’s need to feel appreciated.
She keeps the cards displayed so that she can see them every day and remember that she is loved, which is an especially important habit for Twos (www.enneagraminstitute.com). She also noted that, despite being 18, she loves having stuffed animals. They make her smile and as goofy as it sounds, they make her feel like she is taking care of something. Though it may seem a bit odd that she thinks of her inanimate, fluff-filled penguin as a pet, her mindset makes sense in light of her identity as a Helper who desires to nurture.
She enjoys leaving notes for her roommate and putting the stuffed animal (a sloth named “Simon Peter”) in funny places and positions around the room to make her laugh. This speaks to Two’s loving concern for others.
Like most Twos, Ashtyn genuinely loves people and goes out of her way to care for them, in ways both big and small. In addition to volunteering to help others, she takes time to bring joy to her friends and family. She regularly leaves funny notes for her roommate and puts the stuffed animal (a sloth named “Simon Peter”) in armpit-scratching, meditating, and other silly positions to make her roommate laugh. This is evidence of Two’s loving concern for others and their generosity in showing that love.
Ashtyn prefers what she calls “happy colors,” in her room. The prevalence of pink and yellow in her room are uplifting and point to the warmth that Twos exude. She also enjoys opening the blinds to let in the sunlight. This can be explained by her aversion to isolation as a friendly, company-loving Two. As a people-person, she hates to feel separate from everything. Another reason that she keeps her blinds open is because as the most sentimental type on the enneagram, she delights in simple things like the beauty of nature. The smell of flowers, rustling of trees, and the sight of a duck family wandering to the stream behind Hart dorms always bring a smile to her face.
However, like most Twos, Ashtyn has to balance her friendliness with her motivation to succeed. Because helpers are practical people that want to impact the world, Ashtyn often closes her dorm room door so she can study in peace. She knows that in order to succeed as a nurse someday, she must first work hard as a student.
Ashtyn tends to fill every empty space of her room with something. In fact, one of her only complaints about her space was that her bookshelf was too empty and she would like to fill it. Her sentimentality when it comes to objects can be explained by her generosity and tendency towards abundance as a Two.
Having not always had the option to be in control of her own space, she takes great satisfaction in the fact that she can now design her own room and choose items that she loves, which aligns with Two’s desire to control their environment.
Her room is filled with an eclectic mix of pillows, pictures, fake flowers, and other decorations– all of which have character and quirkiness that make her happy. She traces her love of personalizing her space back to her desire to be known. The high value that Twos place on love and kindness has prompted Ashtyn to make her space into a home.
